One could sew a beret hat or other hats by themselves to participate in a hat party. Following paragraphs are some detailed instructions.

At first, one should prepare some materials and tools, such as Sinamay fabric, clear glue, gloves, hairdryer, marker, hat stiffener, bucket, elastic, glue gun, kettle, plastic bag, etc.

Detailed Instructions:

Sinamay fabric

According to required width, cut two layers for the hat brim. In general, a half meter of Sinamay is enough for the hat crown. This length allows you fold into two layers. Cut a five centimeters wide bias strip, preserving enough seam allowance. It should note that the length should be long enough to wrap the brim of the hat.

Secondly, the two-layer Sinamay cuts should be submerged in stiffener. The agitate the painter roller in the stiffener. Roll the brush over the Sinamay lightly. Covering all surfaces evenly and do not neglect any part of it. Then, it is turn to hairdryer, which could open small holes in the Sinamay fabric. Then, repeat the process if necessary.

Thirdly, submerge the hat crown in boiled water. After the fabric gets wet, take it from water and put it over the block, removing creases out through rubbing it with your fingers. Then elastic bands should be used to keep the crown in place and keep creases away. The bask it in the sun to dry.

After it get dried, peel the Sinamay off the crown block with a round pallet knife. Measure and record the required height. Cut along the marking, keeping it is straight. Repeat the above process to cut the hat brim. Then cut the brim carefully along the contour.

Take the hat wire and cut suitable length for both crown and brim. It would be better to zigzag the hat wire on both edge of hat crown and that of hat brim. Unfold the cut bias strip and you will find a fold line in the middle. Take the outer edge and fold towards the middle line. Sew the bias stripe to the brim. The step is very important and it will affect the outcome of the hat. So many attentions should be paid to the link.

Then all parts should be assembled together. One should place the crown on the brim, so that the position of the crown should be fixed. Mark the position of the crown by a marker and then cut it out. Cut notches in the brim according to the size of crown. It should wrap the crown when it is folded. Attach the crown to the brim with a glue gun.

Adjust the band along the inside the crown, then attach the inner band to the crown by a needle or glue. The curled decoration should be even and flat. When a bow or any other decoration have been accomplished, thread or glue them together.

All above details are practical guidance when someone would like to sew a hat by himself or herself. Thanks for visiting the website.

Vintage Vogue in 1940

When it comes to vintage hat, some luxurious occasions may occur to most people. All following contents will be helpful for no matter who would like to make a vintage hat. From time to time, it's difficult for laymen to sew a striking hat by themselves. It's critical to know all steps ahead of beginning. In other words, one needs reading some useful instructions to get necessary information. I choose a slightly thin wool felt in green as the main material of my hat.

Prior to sew the green hat, I starched the wool felt to hold up well. I intended to use heavy wires when I prepare for it. But only to find my millinery wire in a box could not be replaced.

According to a template, prepare all parts cut and trace threads on them. You'd better tread trace here. The process will not take long time and traces need to be seen on both sides. Now I would like to illustrate functions of every part. The part A is the front; curved end on the left is the end curved down toward the face when someone wears it.

Though I was confused about those parts at the time of beginning, the pointy end is a part of the "bow" on the good finished hat.

Fold the part C along the middle line connecting two pointy ends. Then sew two rounded edges together. After the step, please pull gathering threads till the round one get straight. Though it could not be straight absolutely, please adjust it as much as possible.

Fold the rounded on A and leave a narrow channel between two makings. Please do the other way around in case you want the raw edge turn in. Then threads along markings carefully. Fold it the rounded edge back, but do not press it.

Then attach them together as shown in the following diagram. Seam allowance should jut out on B. It should be done at that point. Look at the inside.

Fold the right side up and sew it invisibly. The stitches on B should be sewn to attach pieces together.

Fold part D lengthwise and press to fix it. In order to get wrapped around it, please prepare more threads as much as possible.  With help of my iron, I steamed the buckram on a hat block. It's unavailable to a Styrofoam ball. One could try to get steam through boiling water in a small saucepan or kettle. It should note that the buckram could not be too wet, because glue between two layers may disappear when it clashes with steam. When the buckram is dry, it is necessary to adjust to fit inside of the hat. It is a useful manner to fix the hat on the buckram with pins along stitching lines.

Then trace a cutting line according to those pins. Sew the buckram onto the hat as instructions, attaching an elastic and grosgrain ribbon. In the end, you will get a hat like this.

I am very glad to make headpieces for special occasions and festivals,  such as Halloween, birthday party, etc. Recently, I have toyed the idea of make some headpieces, such as an uk beret hat, top hat, knit hat and the like. Firstly, I would like to make a top hat. Some supplies of a top hat are as follows:

· Template

· Scissors

· Cardboard

· Felt

· White glue

· Paper

· Embellishments

· Inner band of Hat

Work Flows:

Print the template on paper and then cut if off.

Draw a rectangle about 11.5″ by 3.5″.

Cut the rectangle with scissors or a die-cutter.

Along sides of cardboard cuts, cut off similar pattern onto felt.

Taking the cardboard circle as a template, roll up the large rectangle to the shape of a tube. Mark the inside with a pencil and glue joints  together.

For the purposes of forming a top hat, use normal white glue to attach those foldable bits to the tube. Then try to wear it to see whether it is fit. Please adjust it, if not.

Replace the white glue with hot glue, if you find that it is difficult to glue the brim base. There is no need to pain the whole thing even the inside could be covered totally. Please cover the top hat with tailored felt in the shown manner. Use lines of hot glue to fix the felt on the cardboard in short time firmly. Then cut off excess bits of felt. When it comes to the bottom of the hat, glue the cut circle with the tube together. Then remove excess materials of felt.

Then you will get a top hat. The following matters needed to do is decoration. Ahead of decoration, one need to collect some embellishments, such as papers, feathers, silk flowers, pearls, buttons and the like. I choose some papers as embellishments of hats.

At first, the paper trim should be glued with a hot flue gun. Then, using dabs of hot glue every two centimeters to make a clean look. The red rolled up flower and spiderweb are made by a silhouette machine.

A plastic skull head in the center of the red flower seems more suitable to the festival atmosphere of Halloween. A curved nose pliers may be useful to fix the center of the flower. Tuck the metallic trim as shown.

Plastic bone-looking teeth on the border of the flower. The last thing is to attach the elastic inner band to the top hat with hot glue. Ahead of sewing a top hat, one could not imagine the subsequent. Sometimes, it turns out great as long as you follow suit.

Besides, the top hat could also be worn for other occasions like Thanksgiving Days and Christmas, as long as replace embellishments slightly, such as feathers and acorns for Thanksgiving Days and reindeer antlers for Christmas.

All above are interests involving DIY. There are also other guidance of hats, such as a French hat, a felt hat, a knit hat, etc. Thanks for visiting the website.
